I often get questions about shoemaking kits, so I figured it was time to answer them properly! 🤍AbbyCox and I are taking on sandals from The Shoe Camaraderie (and hopefully not setting the house on fire). As a historical shoemaker, I don't have a lot of experience with modern techniques, but the concepts are familiar. But, as many of these kits are aimed at the absolute beginner, I've brought Abby along to test things out as well! Kits from 🤍 Abby made Astrid, I made Ines. As noted, they are going on a one year break and are having a sale which was extended to August 7th to deal with sudden demand, but may not have enough available for everyone (there are other options below). Shoemaking kits (or sandal making kits) can be a great way to start out learning this new skill or to just do a fun adult craft! Some are sold as complete bundles with instructions, supplies, and tools. Others will sometimes split these parts up, so be sure you're grabbing everything you need (and nothing that you don't). I was honestly surprised at how easy it was to tailor our supply needs when purchasing, as I already have a fairly full kit of shoemaking tools. This is a quick run through of how I hand roll linen threads the traditional way for hand sewing the shoes I make. By making a thread in this way, the two ends are the finest parts of the thread and you are able to make small holes in the leather and pull relatively large threads through them, making water tight seams. All of my sewing is by hand, whether I'm doing fine 2 ply sewing on the uppers (known as 'Closing') through to rolling, and using, 14 - 16 ply threads for sewing the insole, upper and welt together (known as 'Inseaming').

This creative single explores the many versatile sounds possible for a string quartet, showing new range to these classical instruments: 🤍 “One of the reasons we chose the song 'The Shoemaker' as our first non-classical single is that it showcases many different sound effects: body percussion, bass drum on cello, vocal effects, etc," says the quartet. “We had a specific idea for the video very early on: namely, to play on 1/16 size instruments. The inspiration for this came to us at a concert where our dressing room was also used for children’s musical education, and we found small violins for kids. Goodyear welted shoes at Carmina Shoemaker's factory. The welt is stitched to the upper and the lining with the Goodyear stitching machine. The gap in the sole is then filled with cork. We will then cut into the sole to create a flap in which our artisans create the closed channel stitching. The sole is then stitched to the welt piercing all the layers to create a compact stitch. The stitch line is then encased by pressing the flap to create a closed stitch sole. In this video I have a discussion with Professor Stephen J. Shoemaker about the reliability of carbon dating for dating Qur’an manuscripts, the critical approach to how texts get “standardized”, and the question of how scholars should understand the traditions that the Qur’an was memorized orally prior to its textual standardization. Professor Shoemaker is Professor of History of Christianity in the University of Oregon’s Department of Religious Studies. He obtained his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1997 and teaches courses on the Christian traditions. His primary interests lie in the ancient and early medieval Christian traditions, and more specifically in early Byzantine and Near Eastern Christianity. His research focuses on early devotion to the Virgin Mary, Christian apocryphal literature, and the relations between Near Eastern Christianity and formative Islam. The heel is one of the most iconic parts of a historical shoe. Whether you are tackling shoemaking or upgrading an existing modern shoe, the right shape of heel can make all of the difference. But they are incredibly complex, curvy pieces that require precise measures- so what details really matter? What tools do you need? What should they be made out of? We'll get into answering all of those questions and more! This is the first video in what I'm considering my Historical Shoemaking 101 series. Heel making is a much more practical place to start than last making, even if the last is a necessary part of the supplies. It's a good way to spend time getting to know what defines the look of an era, as well as understanding the curves and demands of your last. I had an opportunity to sit down with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker and we talked about Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. While still retaining most of its farmhouse character, the house has seen some renovations and was partly converted into rental units. The property features a few outbuildings including a garage, a workshop and a small guest cabin. In 2018 the property was put up for sale and listed only for the land as a commercial lot. It sold in 2021 and plans are to knock it and the neighboring home down to make way for a 6-story 164-unit apartment building.
