Labour leader Ed Miliband was challenged on Bite The Ballot's #LeadersLive about GCHQ, and the unlawful mass-surveillance it has been conducting on British & international citizens. Follow / contact me on Twitter ► 🤍 Since the Edward Snowden revelations which exposed the mass-surveillance infrastructure that has been built by the US & UK governments, there has been hardly any push-back from the main political parties. I think this is outrageous, and mainly to do with policy being put through by politicians who know very little about the technology that is involved. I currently don't see the Labour Party as a real alternative to the Conservative party who has been eager to rush through so much legislation to allow the government to spy on innocent citizens, journalists, doctors and lawyers. How can democracy possibly function if our tax is being used to fund illegal acts of spying? After my set of questioning on this segment of Bite The Ballot's online show 'Leaders Live', the fantastic Tom Harwood took Edward Miliband on with some excellent points. Legality of GCHQ surveillance questioned by leading lawyer Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: 🤍 Cabinet ministers have long insisted that GCHQ's surveillance programmes are legal. (16 Mar 2017) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY ASSOCIATED PRESS - AP CLIENTS ONLY Washington D.C. - 16 March 2017 1. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer arriving 2. SOUNDBITE (English): Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary "Last on Fox News on March 14th, Judge Andrew Napolitano made the following statement, quote: 'Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command. He didn't use the NSA (National Security Agency), he didn't use the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), he didn't use the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), and he didn't use the Department of Justice. He used GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters). What is that? It's the initials for the British intelligence spying agency. So simply by having two people saying to them, the president needs transcripts of conversations involving candidates Trump's conversations involving President-elect Trump, he's able to get it and there's no American fingerprints on this. Putting the published accounts and common sense together, this leads to a lot.'" SOUNDBITES SEPARATED BY BLACK FRAMES 3. SOUNDBITE (English): Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary "Again, that happened, I think, two days ago. It was something that was, you know, reported on air. I think the point is that there's been, no, no it has not been raised, but I do think again...we're not...I'm just...all we're doing is literally reading off what other stations and people have reported. And that casts concern that some of the activities that may have occurred during the '16 election. We're not casting judgement on that. I think the idea is to say that if these organisations, these individuals came to these conclusions, they merit looking into." 4. Spicer leaving STORYLINE: The White House Press Secretary on Thursday quoted Fox News coverage suggesting that the UK's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) may be implicated in alleged wiretapping of Trump Tower. Sean Spicer went on to quote former judge and Fox News analyst Andrew Napolitano, who, during a March 14th broadcast, claimed that former President Barack Obama "went outside the chain of command" to carry out surveillance. Spicer added that while the White House is "not casting judgement" on these allegations, "they merit looking into." The top two members of the Senate intelligence committee released a statement earlier Thursday declaring there is no indication that Trump Tower was "the subject of surveillance" by the US government before or after the 2016 election. Spicer suggested the statement from Republican senator Richard Burr and Democrat Mark Warner, was made without a full review of the evidence or, incorrectly, a briefing from the Justice Department. = Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info🤍aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. 🤍 - A new investigation by The Intercept reveals the National Security Agency and its British counterpart, the GCHQ, hacked into the internal computer network of the largest manufacturer of SIM cards in the world, stealing encryption keys used to protect the privacy of cellphone communications across the globe. The secret operation targeted the Dutch company Gemalto. Its clients include AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and some 450 wireless network providers around the world. It produces two billion SIM cards a year. According to The Intercept, the stolen encryption keys give intelligence agencies the ability to monitor mobile communications without seeking or receiving approval from telecom companies and foreign governments. According to The Intercept, agents from the NSA and GCHQ formed the Mobile Handset Exploitation Team in 2010 to specifically target vulnerabilities in cellphones. The Intercept's report was written by Jeremy Scahill and Josh Begley. It was based on documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. We speak to Chris Soghoian, principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union. He is also a visiting fellow at Yale Law School's Information Society Project.
